OASiS: Semiconductors and Integrated Scalable Manufacturing

Two people stand in the cleanroom

Ohio Southwest Alliance on Semiconductors and Integrated Scalable Manufacturing (OASiS) is a collaboration between the University of Cincinnati and 14 partner colleges aimed at preparing individuals for entry-level careers in the semiconductor industry.  Established in 2022 with the support of Intel, OASiS focuses on equipping individuals with STEM backgrounds with the essential skills required for semiconductor careers.  Through OASiS, participating institutions have developed a comprehensive program that includes a series of courses plus a hands-on clean room experience.  Upon successful completion of all program components, participants can earn the OASiS Rapid Certification micro-credential.

Since its inception, over 500 students with backgrounds in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, mechanical and materials engineering, physics, and chemistry have successfully completed through the program. OASiS offers learners valuable semiconductor workforce development opportunities, helping to meet the anticipated need for over 100,000 skilled workers in the field by 2030.

The OASiS courses provide an overview of the process of transforming a silicon wafer into a semiconductor chip. Delivered online, the courses consist of videos, readings, and quizzes and take approximately 20 hours to complete.

The current curriculum includes five courses and a clean-room experience:

  • Introduction to Semiconductor Processing Environment and Safety Protocols
  • Chemical Safety in Semiconductor Processing
  • Introduction to Integrated Circuits Fabrication Processes and Metrology
  • Introduction to Semiconductor Manufacturing and Equipment Safety
  • Professional Skills
  • Clean Room Experience (Alternative Options Available)
